I grew up in Michigan, and we always had multiple boats:
- a runabout
- a fishing boat
- a canoe
- and a sailboat
I love being on the water.
I have lived all around the country (Atlanta area, San Francisco Bay area and now Nebraska). Imagine my surprise when I discovered a huge sailing community here in Nebraska!
I had a small sunfish sailboat for several years, but when I was accepted into a graduate program at Harvard Extension School, I sold my boat as I didn’t have time to sail.
I promised myself that when I graduated, I would buy a new boat. During one class on film making, I interviewed a fellow sailor and club member for a short documentary on building his own sailboat. When I pulled into his driveway for the interview, there was a beautiful 18′ pocket cruiser and trailer sitting in his driveway. I asked him about the boat and he replied “I bought it to fix it up…. then I’m going to sell it to you!”. I told him as soon as I finished school that I would be interested. But I didn’t take
Well, my last semester of school the owner asked me if I was interested in purchasing Larry. OF COURSE! I had been keeping my eyes open for something, but I really liked Larry. I told the owner I wanted the boat, and would pay him for it, but I couldn’t take ownership until school was done, because I was afraid I would be distracted by the boat!
So, spring rolls around – who would have envisioned COVID-19. I’ve been patiently waiting for it to become safe enough to go out to the lake, so I can take Larry out for a spin!
